Softball picks up first win of the season

Tianna Allen
The St. Catherine softball team continued play on their spring break trip with three games on Saturday. The Wildcats went 1-2 on the day. They defeated Clavin College (MI) 5-2 and lost 7-2 to Pacific University (OR) and 11-1 to Central College (IA).

One day after flying in and playing their first game of the season, the travel weary Wildcats spent most of the morning trying to get their bats to wake up for their second, third and fourth games of the year.

In the first game of their triple-header the Wildcats lost 7-2 to Pacific. Jessi McGehee picked up her fourth RBI in two games as she doubled in a run for the Wildcats in the 6th inning. Tianna Allen (0-1) pitched the first game of her collegiate career, and, despite taking the loss, the first year pitcher showed great promise for the rest of the season. With the loss the Wildcats record fell to 0-2 on the season, Pacific improved their record to 8-5.

Game two was more of the same as the Wildcats struggled offensively. On the other side of the diamond Central was playing in their 16th game of the season and showed that they were in mid-season form. The Dutch took advantage of four Wildcat errors to score six unearned runs and pick up an 11-1 win in five innnings.

Katie Allen's rbi double was the lone run for the Wildcats. Kayla Bergerson (0-2) again went the distance for the Wildcats giving up 10 hits and only 5 of the 11 runs were earned. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-3 on the season. Central improved to 15-1 with the win.

Tianna Allen (1-1) returned to pitch for the Wildcats in their final game of the day against Calvin. Outside of  a triple in the second inning that put Calvin ahead 2-0, the freshman was in command of the game. She surrendered only five hits, and more importantly, gave St. Kate's a chance to win.

In the final three innings of play the Wildcats offense took advantage of that opportunity and secured the teams first win of the season. St. Kate's scored one run in the fifth and two each in the sixth and seventh to pick up the 5-2 victory. McGehee's four hits, three singles and a triple, led the offensive attack.

After two days of action in Tucson the Wildcats are now 1-3.

The team continues play with two more games on Sunday March 23rd before getting an off day.
